Review ~ Stolen by Allison Brennan

Sean Rogan isn’t the same person he was back in college.  He was young, brilliant, and a little reckless.  No one could hack a computer or security system like he could. And, truth-be-told, still can. He’s not proud of some of the things he has done, and he has spent most of his life looking over his shoulder, knowing that at any moment the new life he built for himself might come crashing down. Now he works for RCK East, a protective service/security company started by his brother, using his hacking skills to intentionally break into companies to test their systems and expose their weaknesses so that he can then create a secure system for them.

Things couldn’t be better for Sean, and the love of his life, Lucy Kincaid.  He loves working for RCK East and Lucy is halfway through her FBI training at Quantico.  Everything is right on track for the happy-ever-after they dreamed of.  Until, that is, Sean’s past catches up with him, and he’s faced with the mother of all ultimatums:  work with the FBI to bring down a rogue agent, clearing his own name in the process, or be faced with the possibility of not only losing his freedom, but losing Lucy as well.  Now Sean has to rely on Noah Armstrong, the one person he never thought he’d have to depend on, to watch his back as he goes undercover and back into the world of illegal computer hacking, working with his college buddy Colton Thayer.  What makes the assignment even harder is that not even Lucy can know what’s going on, and Sean never lies to her.

Sean has to make things look as realistic as possible, so he picks a fight with his brother Duke, founder of RCK, so that he can quit his job and head to New York for his new “job.” Sean is quickly immersed in Colton’s plan to take down a pharmaceutical company, a company that primarily does cancer research, and one Colton blames for a loss he endured many years before.  Sean and Colton quickly fall back into the easy working relationship they had while in college, but the same can’t be said for the rest of the crew. Sean trusts no one.

Things go south pretty quickly.  From security issues that should have been known well before hand, to a possible corrupt Senator, to a dirty FBI agent, Sean quickly finds not only the undercover operation in grave danger, but his life as well.  And when Lucy is dragged into the middle of it, all bets are off. Sean will stop at nothing to save the assignment, his freedom, and Lucy’s life.

Stolen, the sixth book in the Lucy Kincaid/Sean Rogan series (see Love Me To Death, Stalked) is a pulse-pounding thrill ride that will hook you from word one.  The writing is quick, the action fast-paced.   Lucy’s character continues to grow from a timid victim to a strong, independent woman. The relationship between Lucy and Sean is solid and unbreakable.  While I love reading about Lucy and hearing her story, it was a nice change of pace to divert the attention over to Sean for the majority of this book, to see where he was coming from, to finally learn the big secret he had been shouldering on his own, and to see how Lucy will stand by and support Sean as he always does for her.  Brennan does a masterful job of weaving multiple story lines into one seamless heart-stopping thriller.  Stolen is Brennan at her absolute finest.

Nothing is more important to private investigator Sean Rogan than his relationship with FBI trainee Lucy Kincaid. But when his past catches up with him, Sean faces an ultimatum: clear his name and help the FBI take down a rogue agent, or go to prison and lose everything he holds dear. With only Agent Noah Armstrong as his back-up and forced to keep Lucy in the dark, Sean steps back into his old world. But the longer he’s undercover, the more dangerous the game becomes. More than Sean’s future with Lucy is at stake—so is his life. Lucy can’t imagine Sean would keep secrets from her—until an FBI agent casts doubt about who he really is…and who he used to be. Why did Sean quit his job with his brother and move to New York? Why hasn’t he told her anything about his new job? With more questions than answers, Lucy doesn’t know who to believe or who she can trust. All she knows is that Sean is in grave danger, and this time, it’s personal.

allisonNew York Times and USA Today bestseller Allison Brennan is the author of twenty novels and several short stories. A former consultant in the California State Legislature, she lives in Northern California with her husband Dan and their five children.

Crime fiction, mysteries, and romantic suspense have always been Allison's favorites, so it's no surprise that her romantic thrillers have a dark suspense edge. Reviewers have called her books "terrifying," "mesmerizing," "fast-paced," "pulse-pounding," "wonderfully complex," "layered," and "a master of suspense – tops in the genre." Lee Child called LOVE ME TO DEATH, "A world-class nail-biter" and Lisa Gardner says, "Brennan knows how to deliver."

Writing three books a year is more than a full-time job, and so is raising five kids, but Allison believes life is too short to be bored. When she's not writing, she's reading, playing video games, watching old movies or new television shows, driving to or attending volleyball / basketball / football / soccer / baseball / softball games, and on occasion even makes it to the gym where she enjoys people-watching more than exercise.

Allison is currently writing the Lucy Kincaid series about an FBI recruit. The seventh book, COLD SNAP will be out on October 29. Also, she's thrilled to announce a new mystery/thriller series that will launch in April, 2014 starring investigative crime reporter, Maxine Revere.
