Guest Post/Virtual Tour ~ Rowena And The Viking Warlord ~ Melodie Campbell

I am best known as a writer of comic crime capers, and in particular the international award-winning G-ddaughter series (latest being THE G-DDAUGHTER’S REVENGE).

However, I also have a second life as an author of racy fantasy…the sort of thing that has been called “The Princess Bride with Sex.”  Yes, ROWENA AND THE VIKING WARLORD is the third in a bestselling series that has me hiding behind a mask at times.

WHY?  Why would a moderately respectable crime author swap genres and write a wacky time travel series, set in Arizona and alternate-world Great Britain?

*         I like Arizona.  Especially in winter.  You can fly nonstop there from Toronto.

Whoops – delete, delete.  Of course, the real reason for using Arizona is I believe in accuracy of setting and doing research, which I take great pains to do once each year in February.

*         I like Great Britain.  And I like to be accurate.  But you can’t travel to medieval Great Britain right now, at least not on WestJet. (WHY doesn’t someone invent a cheap time travel airline?)  So I can’t be completely accurate, which bugs me a lot.  But I can be silly, which is almost as good.  Hence, Alt-world.

*        My cousin Tony’s family, the Clegg-Hills, used to own a Norman castle in Shropshire.  Unfortunately it burned down in 1556.  Damned careless of them.  I had to make up what it would look like from family stories, which are probably dubious at best, and vaguely criminal, on reflection.  Also, I hate being sued. Hence, Alt-world.

*         Fessing up, here.  I actually didn’t mean to write funny time travel.  I meant to write a serious whodunit that would get the respect of the Literary crowd, and the more erudite members of Crime Writers of Canada.  This ‘veering from plan’ is becoming a nuisance.  Next book, for sure, will be a serious whodunit.  Okay, maybe a whodunit.  Okay, maybe a book.

 *      Okay, I lied.  The serious whodunit turned into a wacky mob comedy series that has already won a Derringer and an Arthur.  Still no respect from the Lit crowd.  So I might as well go back to writing wacky time travel.

Why?  ‘Cause it’s a hell of a lot of fun.  Castles, and swordfights, and swashbuckling warriors…magic and mayhem…add a modern day woman stuck in a medieval world, messing up spell after spell…

Stir vigorously!

Yup, I’m having fun.  And hopefully my readers are too, because that’s what it’s all about.

He was her enemy and her lover…

As Cedric fights battles down south, Rowena unwittingly rides into an enemy war camp and is taken prisoner by her old friend Lars, who is not what he seems.

Yet Rowena is not helpless. After all, she is a hereditary half-witch with a whole lot of magic in her. Too bad she doesn’t know how to use it. Escaping from the camp, she continues to botch up spell after spell. Soon Kendra joins her on the trek back to Huel, along with the latest magical mistake, a flame-burping dragon called Cinders.

When war comes to Land’s End, it brings the one man who threatens to conquer everything in Huel, including Rowena’s heart. Now she has to make the biggest decision of her life. Will she return through the wall to safety in Arizona? Or will she stay in Land’s End for good, and fight to save her people from the Viking Warlord?

Melodie has a commerce degree from Queen’s University, but it didn’t take well.  She has been a bank manager, college instructor, marketing director, comedy writer and possibly the worst runway model ever.  These days, Melodie is the Executive Director of Crime Writers of Canada.

Excerpt ~

My name is Rowena Revel and I am the last hereditary witch of Land's End.

Unfortunately, I'm not a very good one.

The trouble is, I have a magic bracelet but no idea how to use it. My mother died before she could teach me. And it won't come off. Spells are a matter of trial and error, so the outcomes are rather sketchy.

I honestly didn't mean to conjure up that Roman Legion in mid-battle.

And apparently I screwed things up by moving back time.

Val, my wizard friend, told me there would be a price to pay for messing with dark magic. But I had to stop the pending war. Thane and Cedric were about to kill each other. Things were so desperate I couldn't wait to find out the penalty.

So I went ahead and used dark magic to turn back time. Now I was finding out how steep that price would be.

  1. I am going to go buy this series right now.  Sounds great.  Just watched The Princess Bride the other day and love Outlander – this sounds like a fun version of both.

  2. Linda Townsend says:

    Sounds wonderful ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Thanks for the comments, Sally and Linda!  I do hope you like the books.  My main goal in writing is to create fun escapist stories – the sort of thing I wish someone else would write so I could read it!  If you come across a writer who writes funny, rollicking adventure like me, could you let me know?  Many thanks!
