Guest Post/Virtual Tour ~ The Jungle Within by Charles M.

Ten things you didn’t know about The Jungle Within

  • It started off as a dare to myself. I always thought I had it in me to write a book. I actually read an article once that said nearly 80% percent of people say they have a novel in them. Wow! I can understand that, and now that I’ve written one I can confirm that yes, you do have a novel inside. If you ever think you have it, just try. I dared myself to do it. And once I got started, I let people read it and they were “Whoa. You can actually write” or “this is a great story; I’m hooked already”. So dare yourself. You’ll be amazed at the results.
  • It deals with death. Death is a scary subject that we all think about. It’s almost taboo to talk about. But I have somewhat been obsessed with it for a long time. In the Jungle Within, I weave the fear of death and the beauty of it into the storyline. I feel that I put a new spin on it making it something we shouldn’t fear, but look forward to after this. It also makes you want to enjoy what you have now.
  • It makes you think. This book talks a lot about spirituality and religion. I consider myself to be a very spiritual person and was once very religious. The Jungle Within gets right into the fear behind some religions and why it’s okay to think for yourself. I know those subjects can make people upset, but the way I presented makes you think. I have gotten great feedback from people telling me that they are still thinking of some of the things in there. Now that is a review that I really love!
  • There are hidden meanings. Inside the Jungle Within there are many hidden and double meanings. It can be a simple story at first glance, but when you put things together, it can be quite complicated. I had one reader told me they blazed through the book in two days and now, a month later, they are reading it again to find the small things. That is a great feeling to know my book did that.
  • You’ll hate one of the characters. Katie, by no fault of her own, was made to be hated. Every book needs an antagonist. Well she is the one for The Jungle Within. You will hate her, but secretly feel sorry for her. Poor Katie.
  • I had most of the story in my head. No author will condone this type of writing, but I had a very minimal outline. Most of the story was in my head. As I work on my second book, which as more complicated timelines, I’m finding it nearly impossible. The Jungle Within might have been the exception to the rule. Probably because I had it in my head for a long time. I was very intimate with it. But my advice to new authors is to keep a good outline. It’s great to free write at times, but for your story to flow, you need to know where you’re going or you’ll waste a lot of time.
  • The original artwork for the cover is hanging on my wall. I knew what this cover was going to look like long before I had it made. I commissioned an artist to paint it and she put down on canvas exactly what was in my head. It was a great feeling. Now I have it hanging to look at any time I want.
  • Chapter 4 is when the cover makes sense. A lot of people have read the back of The Jungle Within and ask, “What does the cover have to do with the story?” I tell them to read at least to chapter four and then ask me again. They never have to ask after that. The cover is the heart of the meanings behind this book.
  • I poured my heart and soul into this book and still had a few errors. I can tell you that one of my biggest fears was publishing with errors. Despite my best effort, I still found a few AFTER I published on Amazon. But don’t fret, it happens to everyone. I quickly corrected them and released the 2nd edition. I tell people to hang on to that 1st edition that has errors because it might be worth something one day 😉 Don’t let fear of mistakes hold you back.
  • I made a shadowbox with a signed first edition locked in. The last 1st edition of The Jungle Within is locked in a shadowbox that I made in my shop. I joke that I should have tied a little hammer on a string and put a not that read, “Break if in need of suspense!”

When Evan and Katie said “I do”, they expected to navigate life together side-by-side. But when a car accident and a tawdry affair disrupt life as they know it, Evan and Katie are forced to venture on alternate paths, alone. In the darkest depths of an unforgiving coma, Evan fights to survive the treacherous jungle of his mind. He embarks on a spiritual journey to understand the meaning of life and the beauty of death…forcing him to face his deepest fear. Meanwhile, Katie ventures through her own guilt. On a strenuous moral journey, she juggles the consequences of infidelity and the strain of caring for her unresponsive husband. But are their paths truly separate? Or are they simply on parallel journeys that are destined to converge?

At age eighteen, I enlisted in the US Navy, a move that allowed me to see the world and explore my passion for life. After 6 years and an honorable discharge, I settled into civilian life, earning my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Technology Management.

Always eager to challenge myself with new and different roles, I took on the role of “Author,” writing my debut novel among the roles of full-time engineer, local business owner, and family man. But, I have no plans to stop there!

I am an avid outdoorsman, enjoy camping, hiking, snowboarding, shooting, and fishing, making the Land of Enchantment an ideal place to call home.

I look forward to sharing my novel and experiences with all of you!

Katie flagged down the waiter for another round of appletinis. She turned off her phone to eliminate any disruption in the evening’s events. She surveyed the room diligently, nodding in satisfaction. The bar was classy. Oak panels stained deep red layered the floor with matching rafters up above. It was the kind of place that lawyers and corporate business-types frequented. Tonight it was bustling with the usual crowd. Waiters played the dodging game, weaving in and out of groups perfectly without ever spilling a drop. As the waiter brought the drinks to the table, Katie shifted her weight and repositioned her legs. Whether or not she was aware of it, she moved ever-so-subtlety closer to Dylan. Katie had never cheated on Evan before, though she had come close a few times. Flirting and sending the wrong message to guys happened all the time with her. It made guys take chances that crossed the line with remarks and gestures most would consider inappropriate for a married woman. Katie desperately craved attention. The attention of any male in the room. Tonight she had Dylan’s.
