Guest Post with Giveaway ~ The Secret Ingredient Of Wishes by Susan Bishop Crispell

Favorite Foodie Fiction

As a writer, there are certain things that I’m drawn to. Aside from magic and romance and complicated family/friendship dynamics, my stories always involve food. In THE SECRET INGREDENT OF WISHES it’s pie—fruit pies, breakfast pies (aka quiche), chocolate tarts, tomato and mozzarella pie (in pastry crust not pizza pies!). And in my next novel , THE PROBABILITY OF FATE, due out fall 2017, it’s chocolate—spicy hot chocolate, espresso truffles, and whiskey infused caramels.

I didn’t set out to always have food be a big component of my stories. But some of my best memories growing up involve my family baking. Like my mom making homemade sourdough bread and my sister and I eating slice after slice still steaming from the oven with butter dripping down our fingers. Then there’s my grandpop’s banana pudding and cherry cobbler. And I can’t forget my grammy’s gingersnap cookies and oat cakes.

There’s also the fact that food is so much fun to write. For one, it provides a really great vehicle for magic. It also provides wonderful sensory details to draw the reader into the story and help connect with the characters through those descriptions. Readers (and writers!) can learn so much about characters through the flavors they love, ingredients they despise, and recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

That’s why so many of the books I love also revolve around food. Below are some of my favorite foodie books that are on my shelves:

  • First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen
  • The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender
  • The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy Reichert
  • The Love Goddess' Cooking School by Melissa Senate
  • The City Baker's Guide to Country Living by Louise Miller
  • The Glass Kitchen: A Novel of Sisters by Linda Francis Lee
  • The Cake Therapist by Judith Fertig
  • The Wedding Bees: A Novel of Honey, Love, and Manners by Sarah Kate Lynch
  • The Kitchen Daughter by Jael McHenry

26-year-old Rachel Monroe has spent her whole life trying to keep a very unusual secret: she can make wishes come true. And sometimes the consequences are disastrous. So when Rachel accidentally grants an outlandish wish for the first time in years, she decides it’s time to leave her hometown—and her past—behind for good.

Rachel isn’t on the road long before she runs out of gas in a town that’s not on her map: Nowhere, North Carolina―also known as the town of “Lost and Found.” In Nowhere, Rachel is taken in by a spit-fire old woman, Catch, who possesses a strange gift of her own: she can bind secrets by baking them into pies. Rachel also meets Catch’s neighbor, Ashe, a Southern gentleman with a complicated past, who makes her want to believe in happily-ever-after for the first time in her life.

As she settles into the small town, Rachel hopes her own secrets will stay hidden, but wishes start piling up everywhere Rachel goes. When the consequences threaten to ruin everything she’s begun to build in Nowhere, Rachel must come to terms with who she is and what she can do, or risk losing the people she’s starting to love―and her chance at happiness―all over again.

post-divider rightsusanI’m not one of those writers who’s been scribbling down stories since I could hold a pencil. I didn’t read constantly growing up (blasphemy, I know!), and I can still be found in public without a book tucked into my purse (again with the blasphemy!). I am, however, the kind of writer who lives for the imaginative spark that introduces me to a new character or story idea that pushes me to turn everyday life into something magical.

I am the author of the forthcoming women’s fiction novels THE SECRET INGREDIENT OF WISHES (Thomas Dunne/St. Martin’s Press, 2016), and THE PROBABILITY OF FATE (Thomas Dunne/St. Martin’s Press, 2017). I have a B.F.A. in creative writing from The University of North Carolina – Wilmington. I live and write near Wilmington, NC with my husband, Mark, and our two literary-named cats.

Aside from writing, I obsess over swoony fictional boys and baked goods and watch quirky TV shows, most of which got canceled way before their time (and I have a wax lion to prove it!).
