Guest Post with Giveaway ~ The Wicked Heir by Elizabeth Michels

White sand beaches that stretch off into the distance as the sun bakes your worries away… That’s the ideal vacation spot, right?  Maybe not…

A vacation is all about escaping our everyday lives, leaving behind the stress, and tossing off all responsibility.  But what if you only had to walk out your back door to achieve that perfect level of escapism?

A few years ago my in-laws gave my husband and me tickets to go on a dinner cruise around the lake to celebrate Father’s Day.  The lake was about an hour away from our house in Charlotte, North Carolina where we lived on a quiet cul-de-sac in a neighborhood.  As close as the lake was, to be completely honest, we’d never been there.  Why?  Because we were busy, we had jobs, we had a small child, and every other logical reason all of us use in our everyday lives.

An hour car ride later, we parked the car, and walked toward the huge yacht that sat in the marina where we would have dinner that night.  As we neared the water we slowed our pace, inhaled the fresh air, and listened to the gentle clank of the rigging against the metal masts on nearby sailboats.  Then, as if hit over the head with the same thought, we stopped, and at the exact same time turned to look at each other.

“Why don’t we live here?”

Since neither of us could offer a rational answer to the question, we did something impulsive that changed our lives forever.  We put our house on the market and moved within the month.

For the first time in our lives we didn’t move to take a job in another city or to shorten a commute.  Instead we moved to pass up jobs in other cities, to have a longer commute, but to be able to be on vacation every weekend when we stepped outside our door.  The past 4 years haven’t been easy—building a life you don’t need a vacation from isn’t a simple process, after all.  There have been missed opportunities at work and plenty of days filled with hard labor while we worked on our new house.  But I’m grateful for the sacrifice every time I walk outside and see the water.  For the first time, I don’t need to escape my home to go somewhere else for a week of rest.  Where I am is just fine with me.

Escaping real life is a tough thing to do sometimes…

In my latest book, THE WICKED HEIR, Isabelle tries to escape her life for a few minutes, but everything goes horribly wrong and she ends up getting kidnapped by her friend, Fallon St. James.  She finds herself on an unintentional vacation at his home for a month until it’s safe for her to leave.  But when their time together is over, Fallon and Isabelle wonder if they really want the vacation they’ve been on together to end.

I hope you find the perfect escape from your troubles this summer, whether that’s found on a beach, on a cruise ship, in the mountains, at home, or within the pages of a book.  Happy summer!

What’s your favorite place to go on vacation?  Or are you like me, and you’d rather curl up with a good book at home?

Your lakeside town sounds wonderful. Sometimes after all the hard work and just everyday life comes unexpected rewards. 🙂 The book sounds like my kind of read and I look forward to reading Fallon and Isabelle's story.
